Buying a Computer

1. Integrated Video? (Video part of the Motherboard?) Indicates a low end cost conscious design. The Motherboard may only be upgradeable by the manufacturer if upgradeable at all. Ask how many free slots for future expansion.
2. Brand names. Unfortunately most brand name computers compromise features, upgradeability, and performance for price. Compromised features may impair performance, upgradeability, ease of use, repair capabilities. Most brand name computers are clones with integrated video motherboards and are difficult to repair (you must ship them back to the manufacturer or install the part yourself For example Hewlett Packard. See customer comments about this problem)

3.

The Dealer. How long in business? How big a company? Reputation? Testimonials? Employee maturity, training and knowledge. Website quality.
4. Warranty. What does the warranty cover? How long is the warranty on labor? On parts? Will the company be in business to honor the warranty? Does the company ship you the parts and expect you to install them? For example Hewlett Packard See customer comments about this problem
5. Tech Support . Free? How long is it free? How much it will cost then? Is there a toll free number? Try calling the number to see if you can get through to a person.
6. Windows 98 or 2000 or ME or XP on the computer and on CD. See customer comments about this problem as some companies such as HP expect you to make your own CD of the operating system even if they do not provide a CD writer.
7. Year 2000 compliant? Hardware and software.
8. Components. Quality. Component Manufacturer. Seconds? Refurbished? Last year's technology? What country are they made in, etc.
9. Bigger Faster? Bigger is usually better however for cache, ram, hard drive (gb). Faster is usually better but not always. A 2000 Mhz Celeron may be slower on most tasks than a Pentium II or III or IV running at 2000 Mhz.
10. Extended Warranties. Most resellers & salespeople make their money here. Do you really need it?
